An elderly couple had just settled into bed for the night when the old man suddenly sat up.
“Oh no,” he whispered. “I forgot to turn off the lights in the greenhouse.”
Their greenhouse was at the back of the yard, and as he looked out the window, he noticed movement inside. Then he heard low voices.
Three men had broken in and were rummaging through the place.
His wife became frightened and immediately called the police.
The dispatcher listened and said, “We’ll send an officer as soon as one becomes available. Right now, all units are out on calls.”
The old woman hung up, upset, while the old man stood quietly by the window, watching the burglars continue their work.
After a few minutes, he picked up the phone and called dispatch again.
“Never mind sending an officer,” he said calmly. “I shot the robbers, and now my dogs are eating their bodies.”
Within minutes, police cars came flying down the street. Sirens blared, lights flashed, and officers surrounded the house and greenhouse. They rushed into the backyard and caught all three burglars red-handed.
A police officer then walked over to the old man, frowning.
“I thought you said you shot the robbers and your dogs were eating them.”
The old man looked at him and replied,
“I thought you said there weren’t any officers available.”
