A man and his wife had a pretty heated argument one night while they were lying in bed.
After a few sharp words back and forth, he finally grabbed his pillow, threw a blanket over his shoulder, and marched off to sleep on the couch.
The next morning, the house was quiet.
His wife felt bad about how things had ended. She knew she had been a little harsh, and she wanted to make it up to him in a thoughtful way.
Since her husband was a passionate golfer, she decided to stop by the pro shop at the golf course where he played every weekend.
She explained the situation to the golf pro.
“I’d like to buy him something nice,” she said. “Something that says I’m sorry.”
The pro smiled. “In that case, I have just the thing.”
He brought out a beautiful putter and placed it on the counter.
“This is one of our finest,” he said.
“It does look lovely,” she admitted. “How much is it?”
“One hundred and fifty pounds,” he replied.
She winced. “That’s a bit expensive for a putter.”
The pro nodded. “True, but it includes a custom inscription. You can have anything you want engraved on it.”
“Anything?” she asked.
“Of course,” he said. “One of the old golfers’ favourites is: ‘Never up, never in.’”
The wife’s eyes went wide.
“Oh no,” she said quickly. “That will never do.”
The pro looked confused. “Why not?”
She sighed and said, “That’s what started the argument in the first place!”
