Jack walked into a sports bar at about 9:58 in the evening, ordered a beer, and sat down next to a blonde woman just as the 10 o’clock news started on the big screen.
A breaking news story came on, showing a man standing on the ledge of a tall building, with police and firefighters gathered below.
The blonde looked up at the TV, shook her head, and said, “That poor guy. Do you think he’s really going to jump?”
Jack took a sip of his beer and said, “I think he will.”
She frowned. “No way. I bet he won’t.”
Jack grinned. “Thirty dollars?”
“You’re on,” she said, placing the money on the bar.
They both watched as the news continued. A few moments later, the man suddenly jumped from the ledge.
The blonde gasped, then sadly pushed her $30 toward Jack.
“Fair’s fair,” she said. “You won.”
Jack hesitated and pushed the money back.
“I can’t take this,” he said. “To be honest, I already saw this story on the 5 o’clock news.”
The blonde looked at him and replied,
“So did I… but I didn’t think he’d do it again.”
